While a very demanding career, M&A offers incredible professional and financial opportunities for those who have the right skillset and drive. In this blog, we’ll take a look at some of the key mergers and acquisitions roles we recruit for, what it takes to excel in each, and the core skills companies are looking for.

mergers and acquisitions roles

1. M&A Associate

An M&A Associate is the next step on the career ladder once you have around 3 years experience as an M&A analyst.

This role is perfect for those who have strong analytical skills and are eager to get more in-depth experience in financial modelling, due diligence, and client presentations.

You’ll work closely with senior team members, providing crucial support to ensure transactions are meticulously prepared and go as smoothly as possible.

Key Skills and Experience

A solid foundation in finance or accounting and proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and financial modelling, are key to this role.

After gaining experience as an Associate, you’ll typically move up to a Senior Associate role, where you’ll take on more responsibility and begin to lead parts of the transaction process.

In M&A there are many different paths to take and will depend what aspect of M&A you are operating in. For example, the career progression from Analyst to Associate to Senior Associate is mostly geared towards those in boutique financial firms and banks.

2. M&A Senior Associate

The Senior Associate role is a significant step up, offering more responsibility and the chance to lead team members. Here is where you will take the lead on more complex tasks and have greater interaction with clients. This role is ideal for those looking to develop their leadership skills while still applying their technical expertise

Key Skills and Experience

Beyond advanced financial modelling and technical skills, you’ll need strong project management skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and be an excellent communicator.

Experience in managing junior staff members and handling more complex transactions is what will help you excel at this type of M&A role. From here you can expect to progress to the role of Vice President.

3. M&A Manager

This position is most likely to be within an accounting firm. As an M&A Manager, you’ll be at the helm of transaction processes, coordinating teams and ensuring deals are executed correctly.

This role demands strategic thinking and the ability to see the bigger picture while managing the details. If you have an accounting background and are a natural leader with a passion for deal-making, this could be your next move.

Key Skills and Experience

Leadership, strategic planning, and client relationship management are crucial. Experience leading deal teams, managing complex projects, and having a strong grasp of market trends will make you an ideal candidate for this role.

Success as an M&A Manager opens doors to higher level roles, where you’ll take on even larger transactions and have more strategic involvement in the firm’s operations.

4. Corporate Finance Associate Director

Like an M&A manager, this role is most relevant to those working within accounting firms. As an Associate Director in corporate finance, you’ll start to make a significant impact on the firm’s success.

You’ll lead major transactions, develop deal strategies, and engage in high-level negotiations. This role is ideal if you’re ready to transition from deal execution to strategic leadership.

Key Skills and Experience

Strong negotiation skills, a deep understanding of financial markets, and the ability to drive business growth are essential. You’ll need to demonstrate your ability to lead complex transactions and deliver successful outcomes.

Once you have successfully proven yourself within this role, the next step would be to become a Corporate Finance Director. This is where you’ll have even greater influence over the firm’s strategic direction and success.

5. Corporate Finance Director

As a Corporate Finance Director, you’ll be at the forefront of the firm’s strategic decision-making. You’ll lead the most significant transactions, shape the firm’s M&A strategy, and play a key role in its overall success.

If you’re a strategic thinker with a proven track record as a senior M&A professional, then this has the potential to be your next career move.

Key Skills and Experience

Leadership, strategic vision, and a deep understanding of both the market and client needs are essential. Experience in managing large teams and overseeing complex transactions will be key to your success. You’ll take on the role of overseeing the firm’s strategy and growth, often with an equity stake in the business.

6. M&A Partner

Just like a Corporate Finance Director, becoming an M&A Partner is the ultimate goal for many professionals within this industry. As a Partner, you’ll be responsible for the firm’s overall strategy, major client relationships, and long-term success. This role is for those who have not only excelled in leading deals but at being a deal originator.

Key Skills and Experience

Business development, high-level leadership, and the ability to foresee and adapt to market changes are essential.

Experience leading the most complex and high-stakes transactions will prepare you for this top-tier role. You will need to be a deal winner, and have built up a solid network of high level business contacts and relationships you can call upon.

As a Partner, your role shifts from execution to strategy, and you’ll take on responsibilities related to the firm’s growth and development. Your role will be mostly focused on securing new clients and business for your company.

While this is a highly demanding and high stress role, with long hours the financial rewards are what make up for it. M&A Partners often earn £250,000 or more annually, with significant bonuses and profit-sharing opportunities, based on your success.
