The insolvency and restructuring industry is highly competitive. But with businesses continuing to struggle in the economic climate and UK insolvencies at an all time high, there is a plethora of opportunity for those looking to make their mark in the industry.
Whether you’re interested in managing high-profile corporate restructurings or advising clients through complex insolvency processes, there is a role out there for you.
As insolvency and restructuring recruiters with a wealth of expertise, we have put together some of the key job roles we recruit for in this sector, what it takes to succeed in each, and the most sought-after skills hiring managers are looking for.
Insolvency Senior Associate / Insolvency Senior Administrator
Once you have earned your stripes as an Analyst, Administrator or Associate within insolvency, your next step will be moving up to a Senior Associate level. An Insolvency Senior Associate / Insolvency Senior Administrator is often the last step before entering a management position.
In this type of role, you’ll work closely with your firm’s managers and directors, taking on more responsibility for case management and client relationships. You will be responsible for a wide range of corporate insolvency matters and will be handling cases from cradle-to-grave.
Key Skills and Experience
Senior Associates should have a solid understanding of insolvency processes, with a minimum of two years’ experience in the sector. This should include hands-on experience in compiling reports, managing creditor meetings, and analysing company accounts.
While a CPI qualification is often preferred, it is not always essential.
As you grow into this role, you will be expected to take on more client-facing responsibilities and confidently lead the entire insolvency process.
Excellent organisational skills, financial acumen, and attention to detail are key. Demonstrating strong leadership and technical expertise in this position will set you up well for a future managerial role within your firm.
Insolvency Manager
The Insolvency Manager role is one in which you will still direct lead on the larger and more complex appointments but also take responsibility for the management and direction of more junior staff members. Depending on the size of the firm, you will be in charge of managing a sizeable portfolio of insolvency cases and be expected to report upwards on case WIP and billings.
Key Skills and Experience
Key to this role is strong expertise in insolvency legislation and processes, as well as experience in managing teams of associates through liquidation and administration cases. Leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple cases at once are all essential to success.
As an Insolvency Manager, strong communication skills and the ability to efficiently lead teams is what many hiring managers are looking for in candidates when hiring for these roles. You need to be able to manage relationships with creditors, shareholders, and company directors during highly sensitive financial proceedings.
To secure a managerial role you should have a solid track record of successful client advisory and insolvency case management that you can demonstrate on your CV and during the interview stages.
Career progression from this role typically leads to Senior Manager and Director positions, where you’ll take on more complex cases and strategic decision-making responsibility.
Restructuring Manager
The role of a Restructuring Manager involves managing the day-to-day execution of restructuring projects. This differs from the insolvency career path as it focuses on ways to manage debt and improve a business’s financial stability before it gets to insolvency.
Therefore, this position typically requires you to take on a more advisory role. You will coordinate with various stakeholders, analyse financial statements, and develop smart and proactive restructuring strategies to save businesses in financial distress.
Key Skills and Experience
To be hired as a Restructuring Manager a solid foundation in report writing, financial assessment, and project management is a must. You’ll be expected to work closely with both senior leadership and junior staff, managing timelines, reviewing financials, and ensuring all aspects of a restructuring plan are executed correctly and on time.
Like with all managerial positions, strong communication skills are essential, as in this role you’ll be expected to present to both senior management and clients and sell your strategic ideas to them.
A deep understanding of the market, industry-specific challenges, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing financial situations is what will set you apart against other candidates.
It’s also important to note that most firms will require you to be a qualified accountant, such as ACA/ACCA, to take on this role. Once you have proven yourself as a Restructuring Manager you are on your way to progressing to the more senior roles, where you’ll take on larger and ever more complex restructuring projects.
Financial Restructuring Director
The Financial Restructuring Director plays a pivotal role in leading the restructuring process for companies facing financial distress. This role requires a blend of financial acumen and strategic insight to guide businesses through challenging periods while maximising value for stakeholders and clients.
As a Director you will take on an even more strategic and advisory role. This will include a move to networking and winning new clients rather than being hands on within your firm’s restructuring projects.
Key Skills and Experience
To excel as a Financial Restructuring Director, you’ll need extensive experience in financial analysis, cash flow forecasting, and debt restructuring. Leadership skills are of course essential, as you’ll be responsible for spearheading teams through complex high-stakes negotiations with creditors, investors, and company owners.
Strong negotiation skills and an in-depth understanding of insolvency laws and procedures are critical for this position.
At this level, directors often interact with boards and senior executives, requiring not only technical expertise but also the ability to present solutions clearly and persuasively.
To impress hiring managers for this role you need to demonstrate both your technical ability and your skills at bringing business to the firm.
Appointment Taking Insolvency Director
In the role of Insolvency Advisory Director, you’ll take the lead in advising companies on insolvency proceedings, guiding them through voluntary arrangements, liquidations, or administrations.
This role is perfect for professionals who have both good technical knowledge and the ability to build relationships with work referrers.
While the role of Director can be incredibly demanding, the financial rewards more than make up for it and what makes it such a competitive role to secure.

The ability to business develop, network and build meaningful relationships is crucial to the success of being an appointment taker.
In this type of role, you will be overseeing a large portfolio of highly complex cases and will need to demonstrate the ability to be a strong and confident leader with the expert technical knowledge to back it up.
